Refraction of Light at Plane Surfaces - Chapter 4 Physics - Class 10 ICSE
Refraction is the bending of light when it travels from one transparent material to another, such as from air into water or glass. This bending happens because light travels at different speeds in different materials. For instance, when light enters a thicker substance like glass, it slows down and bends inward, but when it goes back out into the air, it speeds up and bends outward. This bending of light is responsible for many optical illusions we see in everyday life. Because of refraction, a straight stick placed in water appears to be bent or broken at the surface. Similarly, objects underwater, like a coin at the bottom of a cup or the floor of a swimming pool, look much closer to the surface than they really are because the light rays change direction before reaching our eyes. If light tries to travel from a thicker material into a thinner one at a very sharp angle, it completely stops passing through the boundary. Instead, the surface acts like a perfect mirror, and all the light bounces back inside the thicker material. This phenomenon is known as total internal reflection, and it is the reason why diamonds sparkle so beautifully and how optical fibers can send internet signals across the world without losing any data.
