He needed a marching song. He asked two men. The first was Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi — a composer from Leningrad who had already given the Soviet Union its most tender ballad, "Moscow Nights." The second was Mikhail Dudin — a poet who had survived the 900-day Siege of Leningrad, writing verses by candlelight between artillery barrages. Together, they wrote "В путь." The film "Maksim Perepelitsa" premiered in 1955. The comedy was forgotten by most. The song was not. Within a year, it had left the screen and entered the barracks. Within a decade, it was being sung on every parade ground from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok. Solovyov-Sedoi received the Lenin Prize in 1959. Dudin lived until 1993 — long enough to see the country he had written for cease to exist.
