Asking a Japanese person, "Are you Chinese?" doesn't seem to be met with much anger, but asking a Chinese person, "Are you Japanese?" seems to be met with a slightly more irritated look. So, when locals aren't sure whether someone is Chinese or not, they'll just ask, "Are you Chinese?" When I traveled to Korea a while ago, a local asked me, "Are you Mongolian?"
