Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. Poland. The Mniszek Massacre – mass executions carried out by the Germans in a forest complex northeast of Świecie, near the towns of Mniszek and Grupa. It is estimated that during the German occupation, nearly 10,000 people were murdered there – representatives of the Polish political, economic, and intellectual elite; patients of the Świecie psychiatric hospital; Jews; prisoners of war of various nationalities; and members of the resistance movement. Most of the victims of the crimes in Mniszek perished during mass executions carried out by the German Selbstschutz in the first months of the war (October 1939 – April 1940). Mniszek is the second largest cemetery of victims of Nazi genocide in Pomerania, after Piaśnica. On September 14, 1947, a symbolic funeral for the victims of German terror took place at the former gravel pit. A monument to those murdered was also unveiled. Over the following years, the crime scene at the former gravel pit was cleaned up, transforming it into one large, trapezoidal grave resembling a coffin. The centerpiece of the grave is a tall concrete cross, at the base of which is a display case containing bone fragments and objects found in the grave. Twelve stone blocks are placed along the entire grave on both sides, each dedicated to a different group of victims.
