But as always, we wanted to see it for ourselves. Our day began chatting with a local mechanic, who told us honestly about the town’s decline over the past 15 years. Walking the old high street, seeing the boarded-up businesses and empty storefronts, it reminded us a lot of struggling towns back home in England. The hardships here feel very real. But that was only one side of the story. We stopped for lunch at the legendary Bright Star Restaurant and it completely blew us away. Southern hospitality at its very best. Our server Crystal looked after us so well, and the famous snapper throats might be one of the best things we’ve eaten in Alabama. We also got a look inside the Bear Bryant and Nick Saban rooms, a reminder of just how much history sits inside this 119-year-old institution. Back out on the streets, we met more friendly faces everywhere we turned. DeMarcus from Empower Community School stopped us and invited us in for a conversation about Bessemer’s deeper story. Beyond the crime headlines and statistics, we heard about coal mining roots, generations of family history, and a place where everybody knows everybody. Most inspiring of all was hearing how they’re investing in young people and trying to shape a better future for the next generation. We ended the day inside Harry & Billie’s Lounge, a proper old-school neighbourhood dive bar. Pool table, jukebox, machines in the corner, cold drinks, and some of the friendliest people you could hope to meet. The locals told us the same thing all day… Bessemer isn’t a place to fear, it’s a place with real people, real struggles, and a real community behind it. This trip was eye-opening. The problems here are undeniable. But like so many places we’ve visited, there’s another side too… and we’re very glad we got to experience the side that often goes untold. #Alabama #Bessemer #DeepSouth #USATravel
