Is Land Art Beautiful or Problematic?

Land art has a complicated history, full of controversy, but it has also produced some of the most ambitious and beautiful artworks ever made. In this art video essay, I trace the movement from its emergence in the 1960s and 70s, then step back even further to look at early precursors; we'll explore monumental interventions like the Nazca Lines in Peru, Stonehenge in England, and Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills, South Dakota. I unpack land art’s close relationship with minimalism and the early environmental movement, as well as its connections to Indigenous land rights, settler-colonialism, and the idea of the land as a “blank canvas.” I look at how these tensions shaped some of the most iconic earthworks of the 20th century and the debates that continue around them. I highlight artists working across different decades, including Robert Smithson, Nancy Holt, Michael Heizer, Richard Long, James Turrell, Agnes Denes, Ana Mendieta, Beverly Buchanan, and Maya Lin. I also look at contemporary and emerging artists who are still working with the land today, from Andy Goldsworthy and Precious Okoyomon to Dineo Seshee Bopape, Dan Lie, James Perkins, David Popa, and Gregory Orekhov. These artists are rethinking what land art can be in the 21st century, often working in more ecological, collaborative, and culturally aware ways. ➤ NEWSLETTER https://www.artists-pages.com ➤ SOCIALS Instagram:   / artists.pages.daily   TikTok:   / artists.pages   ➤ PRODUCTION Written by Phoebe Carroll and Imi Read.
