For many years now I have been visiting Napoli, the one thing I was always told and warned of was to Not visit or spend any time in the Garibaldi neighbourhood. This is the community area where most of the migrants live and it tends to have very negative reputation. In this content, I was shown around the community. It has its issue, poverty and lack is quite a common scene within the area. Some of the buildings are run down, people selling or begging on the side walk and there is a lot of homelessness around in the square area in particular. Majority of the people I met where from the western part of Africa, predominately The Gambia and Senegal. Some of them owned business's and thriving in other economic sector. These are migrants who live, work and call Naples their home. They have gradually created a stable supported community. I took a walk around the busy market area off Via Firenze and every goods, materials or necessities on displayed were imported from Africa and made accessible to their community. From crafts to arts, clothing and traditional food. I never for once felt unsafe or intimidated with my camera as I openly filmed my experience, other than welcomed. I am not going to pretend that life for these people are perfect, far from it, however, what I sensed was a group of people creating a new wave of opportunities within their community. Whilst life appears good for some there were a few Africans who I noticed experiencing mental health homelessness, sleeping rough in the Garibaldi square. It wasn't a pretty sight.
