Learn It With Me: 10 Skateboarding Essentials for Beginners (I'm Learning Switch Too!)

Learn It With Me... The Essentials of Skateboarding. This is the beginning of a series I've thought about for a long time, but held back on out of fear. More on that in a moment. Every skater starts somewhere, and those beginnings are always humble. You're not dropping into vert ramps or charging El Toro on day one. Most likely, you're not even doing tricks yet. You're simply figuring out how to stand on a skateboard, balance, push, turn, and roll. And in this day and age - skating is no longer kids only. Many adults are giving it a try later in life. Of course, none of this is groundbreaking. There are already countless skateboarding tutorials online. So why make another one? Who am I to tell anyone how to skate? I'm not a pro, and I've never been a pro. That right there is the fear I've been wrestling with. What do I really have to offer? Then I stopped and thought about it: I've been riding skateboards on and off for more than 40 years. I've taught people how to skate. I've helped beginners take those first steps. Guess what dummy - you're qualified. You've been doing this long enough that skating is second nature to you!!!! The only thing holding me back was the same thing that holds many people back from trying skateboarding in the first place: Fear. Fear of not being good enough. Fear of looking awkward. Fear of failing. So let's do what skateboarding has taught me to do for decades. Put the fear aside and go for it. Now here's where this series gets interesting. If I was going to make another beginner tutorial, I wanted it to be different somehow. Then it hit me. Switch. Do the whole thing Switch!!! (Switch means riding in your non-dominant stance) Honestly - I'm not very good at it. I rarely skate switch. When I do, it looks awkward as hell. In fact, despite having decades of experience on a skateboard, the moment I step into switch stance, I look a lot like a beginner again. Which makes this a wonderful way to teach, because I know how to do it in my normal stance but am learning it in the switch stance. I won't be teaching from a pedestal, I can learn right alongside you. I will look awkward as hell, with you! Lets be Awkward together!!! Learn It With Me This Skateboarding Journey is here to provide you with inspiration to get back out there and go skate. Whether you're in your 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's , 60's. Its never too late to skate! We'll also be showing you some really fun skating. 50 years old and still charging. No excuses, no slowing down — just pure grind, grit, and passion.
