《Overview of Koume-dori Avenue》 Koume-dori is a ward-managed road that vividly preserves the remnants of the post-Great Kanto Earthquake reconstruction plan. It possesses unique characteristics that are rare even on a national scale. 1. The Mystery of the Oversized Dead End ・Abrupt Transformation: For approximately 750 meters heading east from Kototoi-dori, the road is impressively wide and well-constructed. However, the moment it reaches the former boundary between Honjo Ward and Mukojima Ward, the road narrows drastically, creating a bottleneck that feels like a dead end. 2. Historical Background: Why is it Incomplete? ・Reconstruction Planning: Following the Great Kanto Earthquake, the road was designed as a "quasi-arterial road" in anticipation of a future motorized society. ・Interruption of the Project: While a portion was completed in the early Showa era, extension work was halted due to resource shortages caused by World War II. ・Abandonment of the Extension: After the war, the adjacent Hikifune River was reclaimed to create "Hikifune-gawa-dori," a wide major thoroughfare. This rendered the extension of Koume-dori unnecessary, leaving it in its current "unfinished" state. 3. Name Origin and Current Status ・Etymology: The name is derived from the former "Koume Village." During the Edo period, the area was famous for its plum blossoms and was even featured in ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Hiroshige. ・Present Day: Today, it is a quiet street with light traffic.
