I'm 76. I Was Everyone's Everything. I Don't Know Who I Am Without Them.

I'm seventy-six years old, and a few weeks ago a girl at a doctor's office handed me a form with one little line on it: "What do you enjoy doing?" I sat there with the pen in my hand, and I could not write a single word. Fifty years of being everyone's everything — wife, mother, the hairdresser the whole town told its troubles to — and I had no idea what I'd answer just for me. I left the line blank. And that was the day I knew. This is the story of how a woman can spend her whole life being needed by everyone and known by no one — including herself. It's about my friend Ruby, who lived the opposite way and showed me what I'd missed. It's about watching my own daughter start to disappear the exact same way I did. And it's about the small, frightening, wonderful thing I finally did about it at seventy-six. If you've ever been the one everybody leans on — the one who pours the coffee, signs the cards, keeps the peace, and never once gets asked what you want — this one is for you. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 The question I couldn't answer 0:59 The blank line on the form 2:19 Forty-five years of being needed 4:34 Ruby — the woman who lived for herself 6:50 Needed is not the same as known 8:08 "But that's just being a good wife" 9:25 Watching my daughter disappear too 10:47 Learning to want one thing 12:28 The one thing that is yours 13:36 Don't wait until nobody needs you 💬 Down in the comments: tell me one thing — just one — that is *yours*. The thing you'd do this afternoon if, for one hour, nobody on this earth needed you. I read every single one. 🔔 Subscribe for honest talk about getting older, the lives women quietly give away, regret, and the things we finally do about it — while there's still time. If this landed on you, send it to a woman who's always the one taking care of everybody else. She needs to hear it. #beingawoman #lifelessons #wisdom #selfworth #aging
