We explain the sign convention we will use in the course to determine the signs of focal length, object-image distances, and object-image heights. We then present the magnification formula and apply it, along with the mirror formula, in several situations to demonstrate how to solve optical problems algebraically. We also explain how to deduce the nature and orientation of the image by interpreting the signs.
