How orthotics can help children with cerebral palsy - Emily's Story
Eight-year-old Emily was born prematurely and was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy. After struggling to walk as a toddler and consulting a paediatrician, it was unclear whether Emily was ever going to be able to walk unaided. Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term to includes a whole range of severities and is individual in each child. Symptoms can include difficulties with walking, talking, eating or playing. More specifically; muscle tightness, involuntary movement of muscles, difficulties with walking and mobility, abnormal sensations. Emily’s muscle spasticity and weakness meant orthotic splints in the form of ankle-foot-orthoses (AFOs) were a good option. After coming to see us, the family learnt that not only would orthotics help Emily to walk day-to day but would also teach her to walk in the right way, with a more normalised gait. The London Orthotic Consultancy has clinics in Central London (Harley Street), Bristol, Cambridge and Romford. Our clinic in Kingston –upon –Thames remains our headquarters and provides clinical treatments for positional plagiocephaly/ flat head syndrome, chest deformities, posture-related back pain, scoliosis, club foot, sports injuries and for a wide variety of neurological conditions that can be treated with bespoke orthotics.
