Houkan Ancient Trail (猴凁水燁履途) The Houkan Ancient Trail has recently become a popular hiking route in Yangmingshan. Located in the Zhuzihu area of ​​Beitou District, Taipei City, this trail was originally a maintenance path for irrigation canals used by local residents and farmers. After renovation, it has been transformed into a popular hiking route combining history, irrigation canal culture, and canyon scenery. Starting from next to the Zhuzihu Police Station, there is limited parking available nearby. Walk past the Penglai Rice Original Farming Story Museum. The museum opens at 9:00 AM, and if you have enough time, it's highly recommended to learn about the development history of Penglai rice in Taiwan. After crossing the road, follow the path next to the houses down to the Houkan Hutian Elementary School Trail. Due to the damp environment and low foot traffic, the stone steps are covered with moss, so walk with extra caution. The Houkan Hutian Elementary School Trail has a secluded atmosphere, with cicadas chirping incessantly in the forest. After crossing a small bridge and passing the former Yangshuwu guard post, the trail connects to the Houkan Industrial Road. A portable toilet is located near the trail entrance. When Jia Mei last visited, this was just a dirt and weed-covered path; now it has been transformed into a smooth, easy-to-walk gravel trail. Following the century-old irrigation canal, the mountain path is clean and comfortable, with tea plantations and forests interspersed on both sides, making for a particularly relaxing and pleasant walk. At the three-way intersection, the left path leads to the century-old maple tree and the Gunshuitou scenic spot. Walking straight leads to the newly built elevated boardwalk. The boardwalk winds along the mountainside, with excellent facilities for easy walking. Since its reopening this spring, it has attracted large numbers of visitors on weekends. Some sections of the previously narrow and dangerous rock face have now been paved with non-slip wire mesh, greatly improving safety. Seeing the suspension bridge spanning the valley indicates that the most exciting part is about to appear. Because the suspension bridge is designed for one-way traffic, there are often queues on weekends. Standing beside the suspension bridge, a stunning waterfall and canyon are hidden to the right, with streams cascading down the rock face, creating a breathtaking scene. The trail exit leads to the vicinity of the famous Cao Family Hydrangea Field in Zhuzihu, where the majestic silhouette of Mount Datun looms before you. Wander through Zhuzihu's unique calla lily fields and farm paths, stopping at a rest pavilion with excellent views overlooking the entire Zhuzihu Basin. On the return journey, due to the complex routes in some areas, it is recommended to download an offline map beforehand to avoid getting lost. 🚗 Transportation Information • By Car: Take National Highway 1 or 3 to Yangde Avenue, then proceed through Yangmingshan National Park to Zhuzihu. 🚌 Public Transportation • Take the Taipei Metro to Beitou Station or Shipai Station, then transfer to Taipei City Bus routes 108, 128, 129, Small 8, Small 9, etc., and get off at "Zhuzihu" or "Hutianqiao" stop.
