Franz Kafka's short story "A Hunger Artist" relates the tale of an unnamed man who makes his living by making public displays of fasting. He declines food for weeks at a time, taking only water. Crowds gather to witness his feats of self-denial—his abstention is to them an art form. Yet, because he is not supervised at all times, only he knows that he is actually keeping the fast. As interest in his performances declines, he joins a circus and is relegated to a small cage, where, unnoticed by most visitors, he eventually expires. The hunger artist performs his own deprivation, yet it is not particularly difficult for him and ultimately causes his death. The story serves as a parable illustrating the uselessness of intentional suffering, whether it be for the sake of art or religious belief. Kafka thus questions the nature of the relationship between artists and their audiences. Franz Kafka’s "A Hunger Artist" was first published in 1922. While his legal career paid the bills, Kafka's real passion was writing. His familiarity with the law gave him deeper insight into its frequent injustices. Kafka started publishing short stories and stuck to a rigorous writing routine that enabled him to amass an impressive body of work.
