Mattie is a fictional character, but reflects the life many children are forced to live in today for reasons that are not their own. Currently, Michigan has over 13,000 children in foster care. Children are placed in foster care after other interventions have failed, but generally are removed from their family's home as a result of abuse, neglect, and violence.
