It's crucial for owners to know they can prevent serious diesel engine malfunctions. These diesel engines in the Discovery 3, Discovery 4, and Range Rover Sport often experience the front crankshaft oil seal being forced out, especially in cold weather. This issue only affects 2.7 TD and 3.0 TD engines manufactured up to and including 2013. Crankshaft oil seal leaks have become a systemic and frequent problem, first noticed in 2011-2012. Simply replacing the seal didn't resolve the issue, and customers kept returning with leaking oil. Land Rover engineers collected statistics worldwide and determined the problem was systemic. They conducted a study, eventually issuing a technical bulletin and introducing a new oil pump. The new oil pump for the 2.7 TD and 3.0 TD engines featured a redesigned seal seat. Engineers instructed service centers to replace not only the seal but the oil pump itself in the event of a seal leak. Otherwise, the problem would recur. Furthermore, the new oil pump was also improved in other areas, including increased performance and a reinforced "lug" where the tension roller is attached. The fact is that recently, in our service practice, we've started encountering cases where the oil pump lug, where the timing belt tensioner roller is attached, has broken off on Land Rover Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 models, as well as Range Rover Sports with a 2.7 TD engine from 2006 to 2010, with mileage exceeding 200,000 km. Worst of all, this leads to a timing belt drive failure, causing the pistons to hit the valves. The damage can be so severe that both cylinder heads need to be replaced! And if we're starting to see this happen on 2006-2009 models, then soon it will be the 2010 models, then 2011 models, and then 2012 and 2013 models too! What conclusion should owners of Range Rover Sport, Discovery 3, and Discovery 4 with 2.7 TD and 3.0 TD diesel engines draw? You should find out what type of oil pump you currently have. If it's an older model, you should be aware that there's a high risk of engine oil leaking through the front crankshaft oil seal, especially in cold weather. And if you've driven over 200,000 km, the tensioner pulley mounting tab could break, causing the pistons to collide with the valves, causing a very serious engine problem that requires expensive repairs. Therefore, if it's time to replace the timing belt, it makes sense to also replace the oil pump, as the combined work will be cheaper than doing it separately. Otherwise, it would be a shame if the oil seal leaks, the engine oil will corrode the timing belt, and you'll have to replace the timing belt again, not just the oil pump, and pay twice!
