Cuban influencer Alexander Otaola reacted with outrage this week to images of dozens of people dancing the conga line, beer in hand, during the San Juan Camagüeyano festival, amidst a water, food, and power outage crisis in the province of Camagüey. Otaola, who lived in the city for nearly two decades, described the scene as a spectacle of vulgarity and neglect: sweaty, intoxicated people without basic hygiene, caught up in the revelry at a time when—according to him—they should be working, demanding basic services, or calling for freedom. "It's clear the water hasn't arrived in months," he quipped to the cameras. The commentator denounced that this scene doesn't represent joy, but rather induced alienation: while a carton of eggs skyrockets to between 6,000 and 7,000 pesos, a bottle of rum remains around 250. For Otaola, this formula—cheap and abundant alcohol versus scarce and expensive food—is the regime's tool for keeping the people distracted and anesthetized. His anger focused on the moral contradiction: people dancing "over the hunger of their children" and over the misery of the neighborhood, on a holiday that, in his opinion, has become an excuse for neither producing nor protesting. The presenter insisted that the underlying blame lies with the Communist Party of Cuba, which—he asserted—manufactures and celebrates this type of collective behavior.
