These large and active predatory beetles are capable of tearing apart almost anything in their weight class. All fish, shrimp, frogs and other creatures without a thick protective shell are in potential danger. What could be worse? The only thing worse than an adult beetle is its larva. The same large ambush predator with two sharp sickle-shaped jaws, similar to pincers. Unlike the adult form, the larva is not able to chew and grind the caught prey. Instead, by injecting a poisonous liquid, it immobilizes its victim and then slowly sucks it out. Diving beetles have often become the heroes of nature documentaries, and first of all, attention is drawn to these aspects of their life. A dangerous predator, capable of catching almost everything that floats by. However, not everything is so clear-cut, and diving beetles are certainly interesting insects in themselves, quite capable of becoming the pearl of an aquarium for which they are chosen as the main species. Moreover, sometimes they are quite capable of peacefully coexisting with animals whose shells they cannot bite through. For example, the diving beetles that I filmed for my video successfully coexisted in my aquarium with large water beetles - the same large aquatic beetles from domestic reservoirs, only herbivorous and calmer.
