PYRENEES : Coustouges

Dans le haut Vallespir en plein cœur de l'arrière pays Catalan, Coustouges est l'une des communes les plus sud de la métropole. A seulement quelques kilomètres de l'Espagne nous effectuons une randonnée à partir du village où trône la magnifique église romane de Sainte Marie construite au XIIème siècle à partir d'imposants blocs de grès rose. Outre sa cuve baptismale impressionnante, l'église dispose d'une porte ornée de ferronnerie propre à la région. Son porche du XIIIème participait à la défense du village. Un chemin nous conduit au sommet de la falaise qui surplombe le village jusqu'au roc de la Creu (prononcez créou) où flotte un fier drapeau catalan. Vue d'un côté sur le pic du Canigou (2784 m) et de l'autre sur la vallée du Riu Major qui conduit aux portes de l'Espagne. PYRENEES : Coustouges In the high Vallespir in the heart of the Catalan hinterland, Coustouges is one of the southernmost communes of the metropolis. Only a few kilometers from Spain, we hike from the village where the magnificent Romanesque church of Sainte Marie, built in the 12th century from imposing blocks of pink sandstone, stands. In addition to its impressive baptismal font, the church has a door decorated with ironwork typical of the region. Its 13th century porch was part of the defense of the village. A path leads us to the top of the cliff that overlooks the village to the Creu rock (pronounced créou) where a proud Catalan flag flies. The view on one side is of the Canigou peak (2784 m) and on the other side of the Riu Major valley which leads to the Spanish border.
