By Council of Ministers' decision No. 90/1117 dated October 22, 1990, and based on Article 9 of Environmental Law No. 2872, Gölbaşı District was declared a "Special Environmental Protection Area." In 1991, Gölbaşı Municipality was incorporated into the Metropolitan Municipality. Today, Gölbaşı is a continuously developing and growing district within the boundaries of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, with a population of 122,288 and a surface area of ​​1,300 km².
