Шабашники в СССР: как обычные рабочие за одно лето зарабатывали на новые Жигули

In the Soviet Union, almost everyone worked for state-owned enterprises, wages were determined by tariffs, and private enterprise was severely restricted. But within this system, there were extraordinary teams of people who would travel hundreds and thousands of kilometers independently to build barns, warehouses, residential buildings, and other structures, and in just a few months could earn an amount comparable to the annual income of an ordinary specialist. They were called "moonlighters." Who were part of these teams? Why did engineers, teachers, researchers, and students work alongside professional builders? Who found the orders, negotiated with collective and state farms, and distributed the earnings? In this episode, we'll explore why moonlighters emerged within the planned economy, how piecework and lump-sum wages worked, where large earnings came from, and whether it was really possible to save up for a car in a single summer. We'll also discuss the other side of the "long ruble": long work shifts, living in barracks and trailers, hard physical labor, poor living conditions, the risk of injury, and conflicts over pay. Why did some consider moonlighters true hard workers who saved Soviet construction projects, while others called them "grabbers"? And why did the state simultaneously need such workers and try to control their activities? The story of Soviet moonlighters is not just about big money. It's a story about people who sacrificed vacations, traveled far from home, and worked almost without days off for the opportunity to change their family's lives. What was the Soviet Union really hiding? This issue explores one of those stories that was hushed up, rewritten, or even destroyed for decades.
