Slade on Greatfield, Hull

Slade were without doubt the most successful and popular British band of the early 1970s. Famed for their flamboyant Glam Rock image they produced a string of chart topping singles such as 'Coz I Luv You', 'Cum On Feel The Noize', and 'Mama Weer All Crazee Now'. Central to their appeal, in my opinion, was the fact that the four members were all working class lads from Wolverhampton. We as fans could relate to them. They had the same humour as us. They were one of us. They were our band. Our first video on Mick Ronson focused on Mick's humble upbringing on Greatfield Estate, Hull. We now want to continue this theme by relating a story of a little known connection between the band Slade and Hull. And Greatfield Estate. Myself and Howard were both brought up on Greatfield Estate. Dave Hill's sister Carol married my brother David in 1973. Consequently our family were drawn into this Crazee world. This is the story of that time. Full of humour and working class spirit it is told in three parts by the people who were there at the time. (We originally planned a single video but we came up with so much good stuff that we had to make it a series of three.) Part One tells the story of my little sister, Annette, who in 1973 was a 14 year old Slade fan who got to meet her heroes. In Part Two Dave Hill's nephew, Matt, tells the story of a very special guitar. Part Three is remarkable. It is an interview with Dave Hill's sister, Carol. It focuses on Dave and Carol's early life on a Wolverhampton council estate, much like Greatfield. She tells of the beginnings of Slade and goes on to tell of the triumphs and tragedies of success. Interspersed with expert analysis by Howard of some of Slade's greatest hits, and never seen before photos, this story will be of great interest, not just to Slade and music fans, but to anyone interested in how extraordinary things can happen to ordinary people.
