I often get asked this question on my Instagram live streams: "Is it difficult to breed capybaras?" Reproduction is not easy for any animal, and it is a truly precious experience. With that in mind, compared to other animals, I think capybaras are relatively easy to breed. First of all, herbivores in the wild are eliminated if they don't reproduce frequently, and most rodent species are prolific. So why didn't they breed for six years? I believe this is because, even in species where breeding is relatively easy, there are many factors that come into play, such as the living environment, compatibility between individuals, and a stable supply of food. When I think about what conditions were not in place this time, I believe it was "individual compatibility." Breeding had continued in the past, and the food conditions were also sufficient. The only thing that had changed from previous years was the male. As the only breeding individual to show change, I believe this was a major factor, and it taught me again how compatibility can make such a big difference in the results. In the wild, young males are driven out of the pack they lived in as children, and one after another, try out new packs. They grow through these various processes, and being accepted into a pack leads to reproduction. On the other hand, for individuals in captivity, the growth process is simplified due to human management. For this reason, I believe there are many situations where they are unable to experience things that they would normally experience. Even if experiences seem harsh and difficult from a human perspective, if we don't overcome them, we may gradually drift away from the laws of nature.
