Stefan Frey is a diving instructor, underwater welder, and ship's captain all in one. This Hamburg native can be found wherever underwater construction work is needed in Northern Germany. Cutting and welding, drilling, or replacing piles are the tasks of these professional divers. The ship's captain coordinates the operations via radio. Just like in the Middle Ages, he produces charcoal in a traditional charcoal kiln. On waterlogged clay soil, the charcoal burner stacks 20 cubic meters of wood and layers hay, grass, leaves, and earth on top. It's a physically demanding job.
