The King of Chemo - patient punches cancer in the face

Almost 5 years to the day of this podcast interview, at the age of just 30, Iain Ward was diagnosed with a malignant Grade 3 brain tumour and told that he had up to 5 years to live. His response was, as he describes it, to "punch cancer in the face". He took on the nickname "The King of Chemo", determined to support cancer research and publicised his exploits on social media. Although he accepts that cancer has totally defined the life he leads now, he was determined that cancer would not define who he was. In other words, he was not going to let it hold him back but allow him to lead a new life. His new life is dedicated to raising the maximum amount of money for charity - a target of £2.3 million - through his marathon running exploits. This is not a case of the loneliness of a long distance runner as he is doing all this with the support of his 13 million social media followers on Instagram and TikTok, who he sees as very much part of his team. Having a team of this magnitude means that he has created his own marketplace for companies who want to sponsor Iain and his battle against cancer. And how is Iain faring 5 years on from his diagnosis? His latest scan showed no increase in the size of his tumour and he is currently symptom-free. He shows no sign of slowing down as he sets off on a 32-day half-marathon tour of his native Ireland before taking on the New York Marathon in the autumn.
