In Myeonmok-dong, Jungnang-gu, Seoul, the story follows a 90-year-old mother living on the second floor of an elevatorless row house, and architect Son Woong-ik, who is concerned about her situation. Son Woong-ik's mother, who cannot leave her 30-year-old regular hospital and 40-year-old row house, says, “This house is the best for me. I have my wedding photo from 68 years ago here, and this is my home for life.” The video demonstrates that life in old age is sustained not by new conveniences, but by one's own pace and the streets, markets, stairs, and movement patterns that the body remembers. Located in Dobong-gu, Seoul, ‘Haesimdang’ is a public rental senior community housing complex for non-homeowning seniors aged 65 and older. Through this space, titled “It Was Good Because It Wasn’t Special,” we examine the conditions that senior community housing must meet. Along with observing how seniors form a self-governing association to manage the community, the program highlights key elements for senior community housing to function, such as the balance between private and shared spaces, appropriate distance and interaction among neighbors, and connections with the local community. “We often perceive the elderly as objects of protection or services.
