Odin cast her into the underworld as a child — not as a punishment, but because her dual nature terrified the gods. Half of her body is a beautiful living woman; the other half is grey, cold, and dead. She rules Niflheim — the realm of all those who die without falling in battle. She is not cruel. She is not evil. She is simply inevitable. When the gods killed Baldr — the god of light, Odin's most beloved son — Hermóðr traveled to Niflheim to negotiate his return. Hel set one condition: that every living being weep for Baldr. Everything wept. Except one — Loki in disguise. Baldr remained in Niflheim forever. In a universe where gods lie constantly, Hel is the only one who follows the rules.
