DIY Balkonbepflanzung: Trockenheitsverträgliche Pflanzen │Querbeet
Sabrina is visiting today from Anke Klingemann. Sabrina shows Anke easy-care plant combinations for her balcony. The two are planting tubs and pots together with drought-tolerant plants. Querbeet Meets Seeing Not Hearing Sabrina is visiting today from Anke Klingemann. Anke is the host of "Seeing Not Hearing" and is deaf herself. Therefore, sign language interpreter Susan is joining us today. "Seeing Not Hearing" has been around for 50 years. We took this as an opportunity to invite Anke to our Querbeet garden. Anke doesn't have a garden, but she does have a balcony. And Anke would like to have easy-care plants for her balcony. Sabrina wants to show her today how to plant a balcony in a varied and original way. The Right Containers The containers chosen are a discarded pot and two zinc tubs. The location on the balcony is in full sun, so the plant selection will depend on that. But the two of them will come to that later. First, the two must drill holes in their chosen containers to allow excess water to drain away. The plants don't tolerate waterlogging, as their roots would rot. A drainage layer of gravel ensures rapid drainage. Drought-tolerant plants Next, Sabrina and Anke fill the containers with the appropriate substrate. This is a roof garden substrate. It contains topsoil, broken bricks, perlite, sand, and compost. Then it's time to plant. Sabrina primarily suggests succulent plants. Many succulent plants, i.e., those that can store water in their leaves, grow in rock crevices in their native habitat and need little soil and water. This makes them ideal plants for small containers. Sabrina recommends stonecrop, sedum, and houseleek, as well as drought-tolerant carnations. Anke selects various houseleek species, which she plants close together in the container. Plants for sunny balcony locations: Pigeon Scabiosa - Scabiosa columbaria Musk Mallow - Malva moschata Houseleek - Sempervivum (varieties) Garden Carnation - Dianthus (varieties) Medicinal Thyme - Thymus pulegioides St. John's Wort - Hypericum perforatum Sedum (species and varieties) Deadwood and stones as decoration Sabrina and Anke fill the gaps between the plants with larger stones, deadwood, and lava mulch. Then water everything thoroughly so that the substrate closes around the roots of the plants. From now on, the pots with the drought-tolerant plants only need additional watering during long dry periods. The plants prefer a location in full sun. In winter, it is best to position the pots so that they are protected from excessive moisture. Finally, Anke and Sabrina arrange the containers on the terrace of the Querbeet garden, and Anke takes one pot home for her balcony.
