Polarography is a branch of voltammetry. Voltammetry is a technique in which a potential is applied to one of the electrodes, while the current flowing through the electrode is measured. The potential is varied in some preselected manner during the current measurement. A voltammetric cell consists of one electrode having a comparatively large surface area (eg: a pool of mercury, SCE) and another electrode having a very small area (microelectrode, for example, dropping mercury electrode, rotating platinum electrode). The large surface area electrode is a non-polarisable electrode, while the small surface area electrode is a polarisable electrode.
