Herne is a large city with 156,000 inhabitants in the Ruhr area. The current station was opened in 1914 and is located on the Dortmund Hbf - Duisburg Hbf and Dortmund Hbf - Duisburg-Ruhrort railway lines. There are also two short connecting lines to Herne-Rottbruch and Recklinghausen-Süd. The station has always had two island platforms for passenger traffic. Platform with tracks 1 and 3 originally had two additional platform tracks. These were offset from the two main tracks, east and west of the current platform remnant. This type of platform layout can still be found today at Hagen Hauptbahnhof. This platform is regularly used by the RE3, RB32, and the S2 from Essen. The platformless tracks between the platforms belong to the current freight line between Gelsenkirchen Hbf and Herne Hot. Platform with tracks 6 and 7 belongs to the connecting lines to Herne-Rottbruch and Recklinghausen-Süd. It is used by the S2 trains to Recklinghausen and the RB43. Both platforms can only be reached via an underpass that begins in the station building. The bus station is located in front of the station building. The U35 station is located beneath Bahnhofstraße. The U35 line is the fastest connection to Bochum and runs at least every 10 minutes during the day. The journey to Bochum Central Station takes 15 minutes. Herne is often used as a replacement stop for Bochum Hauptbahnhof during construction work or disruptions. To the east of the station, there are still a few sidings used for construction material trains. A connecting line to an INEOS plant begins at the western end of the station.
