She gave birth to Prince Xiao Fangdeng and a daughter, Princess Yichang, Xiao Hanzhen. In the first year of the Chengsheng era (552 AD), Xiao Yi ascended the throne as Emperor Yuan of Liang. Because Emperor Yuan was one-eyed, during one of his visits, Consort Xu only wore "half-face makeup" (half her face was made up, the other half was unmade up). Knowing that he was intentionally mocking her, he was furious, pointed his sleeve, and left, ignoring her for several years. This is the story of "Consort Xu's Half-Face Makeup." Li Shangyin's poem "Southern Dynasties" contains the line, "Don't boast that this place divides the world, for it only has Consort Xu's half-face makeup." Later generations used "half-face makeup" to praise her beauty. Ji Jiang, a courtier of Emperor Yuan of Liang, was a handsome man. Consort Xu, already middle-aged, still seduced him into an affair. Ji Jiang sighed, "Though Consort Xu is old, she is still full of affection" (from the *History of the Southern Dynasties*, Biographies of Imperial Consorts). Later, the phrase "consort Xu, though middle-aged" became an idiom for a woman of advanced age who still retains her charm. Even more extreme, Consort Xu, knowing of He Huichang's handsome appearance, wrote a love poem to him using a white horn pillow. Their exchange of poems reached Emperor Yuan's ears. Unable to bear it, and further burdened by the death of his beloved concubine, Lady Wang, who had given birth to a child, he suspected Consort Xu of poisoning her. He forced Consort Xu to commit suicide. In the third year of the Taiqing era (549), Consort Xu drowned herself in a well and was hastily buried near the Wagong Temple in Jiangling.
