Not only has the Ninja 650, Kawasaki's street-legal supersport, been given a visual and technical makeover for 2020. Because the 649cc parallel twin engine with 68 hp of its naked sister model, the Z650, was also being prepared for the strict Euro 5 emissions standard for the coming season, the Japanese development engineers took this opportunity to comprehensively fine-tune the mid-range naked bike, which weighs just 188 kg when ready to ride. Modifications to the intake tract and exhaust system are said to have achieved higher mid-range torque and a more powerful sound – while maintaining fuel economy. We tested the engine to see if the promises hold true.
