Technical Guide: Growing avocado trees from the pit (seed) is a process divided into two main phases: hydroponic germination and transplanting to the final soil. Phase 1: Seed Germination Cleaning: Remove the pit from the ripe fruit and wash it under running water to completely eliminate any pulp residue, preventing the proliferation of fungi. Identify the base of the seed (the flatter, wider part where the roots will sprout) and the top (the pointed part where the stem will emerge). Support Fixation: Insert three toothpicks radially into the middle of the seed, with a slight upward tilt. They will serve as support to suspend the pit. Support the structure on the edge of a container with water. Position the pit so that only the base (about 1/3 of the seed) remains submerged. Keep the container in a well-lit place, without direct sunlight. Replace the water every 2 or 3 days to prevent stagnation and the proliferation of vectors. Germination usually occurs between 2 and 6 weeks. Phase 2: Transplanting and Soil Preparation: The seedling will be ready for planting when the root system is well developed and the stem reaches approximately 15 centimeters in height. Site Selection: Choose a location with high incidence of direct sunlight (minimum of 6 hours daily) and adequate space for the tree to grow. Hole Preparation: Dig a hole with minimum dimensions of 40x40x40 centimeters to ensure soil decompaction. Substrate Composition: The avocado tree requires aerated soil with excellent drainage. Mix native soil with organic compost (or cured manure) and add a portion of coarse sand if the soil is excessively clayey. Center the seedling in the hole, fill the empty spaces with the substrate and lightly compact the surface. Water abundantly immediately after planting to settle the soil.
