Why a Rotary Table Was Used in This Two-Shot Mold Design

Motion-based mold design is not about animation — it is about validating engineering decisions before steel cutting. This video explains why a rotary table was used in this two-shot mold design. The mold produces consumer products in a 1+2 configuration, including two transparent components and one opaque component. The mold uses a cold runner three-plate system with pin-point gating, based on DME standards. Before rotary indexing, both first-shot and second-shot molds must complete synchronized opening sequences. The first-shot mold performs: • Runner ejection • Side-action release At the same time, the second-shot mold completes: • Runner release • Multiple side-action movements After mold opening, the finished second-shot parts are ejected. The rotary table then rotates 180 degrees, transferring semi-finished components to the second-shot station. Engineering note: Motion coordination is often more critical than mechanism complexity in rotary two-shot molds. Stable synchronization between mold opening, part transfer, and second-shot injection is essential for production reliability.
