Ay, Carmela! ESTRENO NYC
“¡Ay, Carmela!” is a comedy with a tragic ending that examines the role of the Vaudeville Theatre in the context of the Spanish Civil War. The government’s systematic policy of censorship had a devastating repercussion in the cultural and the artistic expressions around the country. Carmela and Paulino are two artists who are trying to survive in the midst of a cruel war. They are captured by Franco’s fascist forces and taken as prisoners. On the verge of execution, an Italian theater-loving lieutenant gives them the chance to perform for the Nationalists. They are faced with either saving their lives or betraying their own values and the Republican cause.
