Columbia University sequenced 128 genomes in 2014 and traced every one of them back to that number. The genetic cost: 1 in 40 carry BRCA mutations, 1 in 30 carry Tay-Sachs, 1 in 15 carry Gaucher disease. In 2016, Mount Sinai researchers tested the DNA of 32 Holocaust survivors and 22 of their children. Survivors showed 10% higher methylation on the FKBP5 stress gene. Their children — born after the war — showed 7.7% lower methylation at the same site. Same gene. Opposite direction. A 2025 Yale and University of Florida study examined 48 Syrian refugee families across three generations and 850,000 DNA methylation sites. 21 sites were linked to direct violence exposure. 14 showed germline-associated changes. Prenatally exposed children showed epigenetic age acceleration — biologically older than their birth certificates. A 2022 University of South Florida study found differential methylation in the children of Tutsi women who were pregnant during the 1994 genocide. The Dutch Hunger Winter of 1944 left lower IGF2 methylation in people conceived during the famine — measured six decades later.
