Having quit my job at 29 to live in this border town, I no longer rush to beat the work alarm, only heading out for this bustling street market. Villagers come from all directions to set up stalls, filled with wild mountain greens, tropical fruits, Dai brocade (traditional woven textile of the Dai ethnic minority, one of Yunnan's main indigenous groups, famous for its bright geometric patterns) and silver ornaments (handcrafted ethnic accessories often worn in festivals), as well as handwoven bamboo crafts. Dai-style snacks (local delicacies with sour, spicy and herbal flavors – think grilled fish, rice noodles, and sticky rice cakes) and unique border ingredients can be found everywhere, mixed with vendors’ calls from different ethnic groups, creating an incredible atmosphere. No need to hurry; I stroll and pick items at my own pace. The little joys of street life perfectly soothe the anxiety I felt from my previous office job. It turns out the best life is not constant hustle and bustle, but freely embracing mortal worldly warmth. This is my simple, healing post-resignation life in Mangshi City.
