History of the Cave's Discovery In New Athos, on the northern slope of Anakopia (now Iverskaya) Mountain, at an altitude of 220 meters above sea level, a chasm known popularly as "Bottomless" has existed since ancient times. Tens and hundreds of years passed, millennia passed, but no one dared to descend into this pit of sheer cliffs. It was only in 1961 that a local resident, 16 years old at the time, descended to a depth of 35 meters using a simple rope. He is now known as the Abkhazian speleologist, artist, and sculptor Givi Smyr. But without special equipment, he could not reach the bottom of the chasm. That same year, a group of speleologists, along with Givi, navigated a complex system of wells and shafts, descended to a depth of 139 meters, and found themselves in a gigantic underground kingdom. The descent lasted continuously for 8 hours and belongs to the 3rd category of difficulty in sport caving.
