How the World Made the West | Josephine Quinn and Peter Frankopan in conversation with Mary Beard
How the World Made the West | Josephine Quinn and Peter Frankopan in conversation with Mary Beard | Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Series Jaipur Literature Festival 2024 Historian and archaeologist Josephine Quinn's recent work, How the World Made the West, is an expansive history of the origins of the West spanning 4000 years. Questioning the idea of ‘civilisations’ within history, Quinn presents an intriguing idea of how it was contact and connections, rather than distinct and isolated civilisations, that drove historical change. In conversation with historian and writer Peter Frankopan and classicist and writer Mary Beard, Quinn calls for a reassessment of the idea of the ‘West’ and takes a deep dive into a shared history lost in time. Josephine Quinn is Professor of Ancient History at Oxford University. She has held fellowships at the Getty Villa and the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library. She published In Search of the Phoenicians in 2018; How the World Made the West will appear in 2024. Peter Frankopan is Professor of Global History at Oxford University. His books include The Silk Roads: A New History of the World; The New Silk Roads: The Present and Future of the World; and The Earth Transformed: an Untold History. Often described as a ‘rockstar’ academic (BBC, New Statesman, VLT, Der Spiegel, he has been called ‘the first great historian of the 21st century’ by Brazil’s DCM magazine. Mary Beard, one of the world’s best-known Classicists, has written numerous books including the prize-winning Pompeii, the best-selling SPQR and the thought-provoking Women & Power. Mary is a regular media commentator, committed blogger and has made many highly-acclaimed television documentaries on the Ancient world. Her latest book, Roman Emperor, delves into the world of that extraordinary role.
