Saab-Phoenix - First Drive!

Part 5 of the video series about the Saab Phoenix 9-3, which unfortunately never entered serial production. It is finally time to test drive the chassis and powertrain that were meant for the Saab 9-3 generation that never made it to production. Unfortunately, the power steering sensor was not connected and the wheel alignment had not been done yet – meaning the car will actually drive even better than it did in this video. I will return with a new test drive further down the road! Anders Johansson, who runs Griffin Cars together with Gabriel Palmenäs, also shares stories from the Saab era and how the closure of Saab affected Trollhättan. Background: The successor to the final generation Saab 9-3 was very far along in development when Saab went bankrupt. Project 540, or Phoenix, featured a new advanced front and rear suspension, a new powertrain, and even an electric rear axle in development. Anders Johansson and Gabriel Palmenäs (who naturally worked at Saab back in the day) run the company Griffin Cars. They have bought up remaining inventory of axles and engines to modernize existing Saab 9-3 cars. But the grand plan is to build a small series of modern cars using authentic Saab technology! (We will return to that later). In a series of interviews with the Saab people who were involved in developing the Phoenix platform, we will talk tech, but of course also test drive one of the updated cars. In this series: Part 1: Background and vision for the future Part 2: The Chassis – Gunnar Olsson and Per Jansson Part 3: Electric Rear Axle – Stefan Barbunopulos Part 4: Engine – Peter Dahl Part 5: Test Drive! Part 6: Interview with designer Jason Castriota Make sure to subscribe so you don't miss a thing!
