Leaning on the pole problem - Morgan horses' first time as a pair.
Learn more about our horse training; subscribe to our Carriage Driving Video Library at www.horsedrawnpromotions.com/cdvl We show Candra's problem with the pole and what he does sometimes when he feels the pole on his quarters. In our opinion, when he was backed up to the pole (which would be laid on the ground when putting to with American-style carriage/harness) he tripped over/broke the pole and/or fell over, which frightened him. This is why he turns his quarters to it and leans on the pole as shown here. If he had fallen over the pole while being backed up to it, or he had leant against it and it had snapped, it could have resulted in him not liking the pole on his quarters, as he thinks something "scary" is about to happen because he doesn't trust the pole. Carriage driving problems like this can be resolved, but as we do not know exactly how these horses were originally broken out in Wyoming, or exactly what happened at the other trainer's yard prior to them coming here, all we can do is base our opinion on the horses' reactions/issues and our own experience with sorting out similar problems. We suspect this is what happened initially (falling over the pole) and combined with bolting issues once they were in the UK, it has resulted in these horses having issues when being put to and while in harness. This film shows them during their fourth week of training with us. After driving them as a unicorn with our horse Roly, we also drive this Morgan pair together on the roads, showing how they react when meeting 2 lorries. We also explain about getting horses' heads to come straight without putting undue pressure on the reins, and why adjusting the coupling reins isn't always the answer to getting a pair to go straight.
