The Redex Trial attracted many of Australia and the world’s greatest drivers, including Ken Tubman, Stan Jones, Jack Davey and Jack Murray. The Redex rules were very simple: no performance-enhancing modifications to cars, except auxiliary fuel tanks and new seats. Teams would lose one point for every minute late to enter a control point, and 100 points for disobeying a direction from race officials. If a driver had to swap a part at any point during the race, they would have 500 points deducted from their overall score, which would effectively end their campaign. A total of 187 racers set forth from Sydney on the 6,500 mile drive, with over 150,000 Sydney residents coming out to wave the drivers off on their epic trip. The trial featured cars from 1928 to 1953. Drivers were required to carry additional fuel drums, sand mats, shovels and picks, as well as enough food and water to go the distance between each checkpoint. 1:32 - 2:03: The 1953 Redex Reliability Trial faced challenging conditions, with roads being improved tracks and a lack of water posing a threat to motorists. The organizers expected around 20 entries but received 192. 2:10 - 2:26: Enthusiastic participants included HR Smith from West Australia and a variety of cars, including a Porsche and a Sunbeam Talbot. 2:34 - 3:10: 63-year-old driver Granny Conway and driver Frank Kleinig. The scrutineering process was thorough, ensuring no replacements without loss of points. 3:17 - 3:30: Radio star Jack Davy entered the trial as a joke but became determined to finish. 3:36 - 4:01: Peter Antill was the favorite due to his knowledge and skill. The trial began with an electric atmosphere, and the first car started at 2:50 p.m. 4:08 - 4:47: The trial was a test of reliability and endurance, with cars starting at 3-minute intervals. The first Holden, Australia's own car, was driven by Pum Kipling. 5:05 - 5:23: The trial continued through the night, with the first man reaching Brisbane nearly 3 hours ahead of time. The organization was meticulous, with every minute early or late resulting in a point loss. 6:07 - 6:30: The trial featured a diverse range of cars from various countries, with an estimated total value of £250,000. Jack Davy was a center of interest at every control point. 7:01 - 7:43: Breakdowns and wildlife encounters. The atmosphere was filled with goodwill from locals. 8:03 - 8:51: The trial saw several accidents, including a Ford turning over three times. Despite the challenges, the trial continued with competitors pushing through. 9:12 - 10:22: The trial reached Rockhampton, with 11 cars dropping out by this point. Competitors faced hidden traps and challenging conditions. 10:29 - 11:00: The trial continued to Townsville. 11:07 - 12:07: The trial reached Mount Isa. 14:16 - 15:16: The trial reached Julia Creek. 16:19 - 17:05: The trial reached Darwin. 21:49 - 23:09: The trial reached the Finke River. 24:31 - 25:00: The trial reaches Kingoonya. 25:10 - 26:06: The trial continued through challenging conditions, with competitors facing various obstacles. 26:11 - 27:06: The trial reachea Adelaide. 28:16 - 29:02: The trial reachea Melbourne. 29:09 - 30:27:Ken Tubman and John Marshall winning in their Peugeot.
