Unsung Hero: The Eng Majok Dut Morwel | Life Stories with Ajak Deng Chiengkou | 8/2/ 2024
In a compelling addition to my "Life Stories" series, I, Ajak Deng Chiengkou, had the privilege of sitting down with Uncle Eng Majok Dut Morwel, a figure whose contributions have been instrumental in the development and unity of South Sudan. This special episode, filmed on the 8th of March in Tarneit, delves into the heart of Uncle Majok's legacy, a Member of Parliament who, beyond his political achievements, is celebrated as an unsung hero of our homeland's infrastructure revolution. Back in March 1998, in the middle of challenges of newly liberated areas in South Sudan grappling with deteriorating roads and escalating fatal accidents, Uncle Majok, then serving as the SRRA Chief Coordinator for Construction and Engineering, launched an ambitious project. His initiative to improve road safety and connectivity saw the training of over 50 South Sudanese, including myself and my brother, in essential civil engineering skills, courtesy of Kenyan experts. The narrative takes a personal twist as I recount my journey from one of Uncle Majok's students in this transformative project to a journalist, capturing our nation's stories of resilience and progress. This reunion brought to light the forgotten chapters of our shared history, reinforcing Uncle Majok's profound impact on not just my life, but on the broader community's trajectory towards development. Uncle Majok's efforts in the late '90s laid the foundations for safer, more accessible roads, significantly enhancing mobility and economic opportunities across Eastern Equatoria. His vision, "We selected you from various places here in Eastern Equatoria because we want to change the face of danger. We need to help our people move freely, and you are the generation that will change this," this is a symbol to his dedication to the South Sudanese people and our collective future. This episode of "Life Stories" is more than a walk down memory lane; it's a tribute to one of South Sudan's most devoted sons, whose patriotism and commitment have paved the way for generations to come. Through this interview, we not only celebrate Uncle Majok Dut Morwel's achievements but also inspire ongoing dialogue about our nation's journey towards peace and prosperity. Join me, Ajak Deng Chiengkou, as we explore the stories that have shaped South Sudan, sharing insights and inspirations from our heroes. Subscribe to "Life Stories" for more narratives of courage, community, and country. Together, let's honour our past and inspire our future.
