Yesterday I had a free day from work, and as always, I decided to spend it in the garage. The starter had been bothering me for a while now. It seemed to be cranking normally, and the solenoid was engaging, but it wasn't starting. It seemed to be spinning idly, and the starting clutch wasn't engaging the flywheel. I thought maybe the starting clutch needed replacing. So I took the starter off, took it apart, and looked, but the old starting clutch was in good condition. There was practically no wear. I took it apart and removed it, and there was practically no wear. I decided to do this just in time; the brushes would have lasted another couple of days. Worn brushes. The brush assembly was falling apart before my eyes. I went and bought new ones, but as always, the market was full of Chinese crap. AOXIN is a great brand of starter brushes, but I don't like having my car sitting around disassembled. I changed the brushes, filed down the armature a bit where the brushes were rubbing, greased everything, and replaced the old starter. Old and new I reinstalled the starter, turned the key, but the car wouldn't start. The starter was spinning idly... I removed it, disassembled it, checked it—everything was fine, then my dad said, "Change the solenoid." No problem, I changed it (good thing I had a new one at home)—no change, no change. It didn't help. The next diagnosis was a worn ring gear. I felt it from a pit—no, the ring gear was fine. I tried cranking the starter directly—everything retracted and turned as it should... I don't know what to do, why is this problem? I decided to install a new starter, put everything back together, put the starter back in, and everything worked. The most important thing is that the worn-out Bendix doesn't hit the ring gear (as it happens in Soviet cars), but simply doesn't engage with the teeth of the ring gear and spins idle. I spent half the evening fiddling with this funny thing.
