The Primus Story. A carpenter from El Sobrante, California walked into a Metallica audition in a blonde mohawk and two different colored tennis shoes, asked James Hetfield if he wanted to jam on some Isley Brothers, and got shown the door. That was 1986. By 1993 Les Claypool was headlining Lollapalooza. By 1994 he was playing Metallica's own songs in front of 350,000 people at Woodstock while they pelted him with mud. And somewhere in between, he wrote one of the most recognizable theme songs in television history for seventy-four dollars and a VHS tape. The South Park theme. That was the whole check. Matt Stone mailed a letter to a management address on the back of a Primus album, Les watched the tape, said sure, re-recorded it faster when Comedy Central complained it was too slow, and cashed a check that wouldn't cover a car payment. Meanwhile Metallica eventually offered Robert Trujillo a million dollars just to sign his contract. Les was out in the woods playing banjo. He said he would have lasted a month. He was probably right. This is the story of a band that got rejected for being too weird, turned "we suck" into a crowd chant, debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 with a song about a guy burying his friend in the mud, and spent a decade confusing an industry that kept throwing platinum at them anyway.
