How to shoot and move | get off the X | tactical rifleman
This week we’re talking about close engagements in a CCD or CQB context. It is important to practice clearing malfunctions quickly (tap/rack, mag changes etc.) but even if you do it quickly it’s still time that you are standing still while getting your gun back in the fight. If you have the ability to move (even a step or two) at the range you train in consider incorporating some of this into your training. When your gun has a malfunction make your first reaction getting off the X. The last thing you want in a gunfight is to be standing still while your gun is out of battery. You don’t need to run far or have barricades to run to in order to establish a proper reaction. You can literally start by taking a small step as soon as you recognize that remedial action is necessary. In reality one step won’t necessarily save the day but building the muscle memory to move when there’s a problem instead of becoming a stationary target while fiddling with the gun is paramount. If you have access to a range that allows you to really move you can graduate to moving to a place of cover or closing the distance to the target while addressing the malfunction or going hands on with the assailant. If you carry a gun and don’t have legal insurance to cover you in case you have to defend yourself go check out US Lawshield. They provide legal aid in the event of a self defense encounter.
