In particular, billionaires typically hold their assets in stocks or bonds, and the administration intends to impose taxes on these assets as well. Until now, taxes were levied only on capital gains from selling these assets, leading to instances where ultra-high-income earners like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Warren Buffett paid not a single dollar in taxes. President Biden stated that while anyone can become a billionaire in the capitalist society of the United States, it is wrong for high-income earners to be subject to lower tax rates than teachers or firefighters. The Biden administration pushed for the introduction of a wealth tax last year to secure funds for overcoming COVID-19, but failed due to opposition from the Republican Party; therefore, it is uncertain whether the tax reform will pass this time.
