Makkam is an important Theyyam represents the case of a “sainted” women belonging to the nayars of Malabar. The Makkam theyyam is performed at the Kadangot tharavadu in Kunhimangalam (Payyannur). Kadangot Aaroodha Tharavadu were the erstwhile rulers of Payyannur and other adjacent areas of Kunhimangalam and Ramanthali. Still the family is based at Kunhimangalam and is a part of the great history of Payyannur and other adjacent areas. Makkam was considered to be an immoral woman by her beloved brothers. The jealousy of their wives made her a victim of their suspicion. The brothers dropped her and children in a deep well. Later she was elevated as a goddess and was worshipped as a chaste woman. The Makkam theyyam is in repentance of this. The festival of Theyyam is celebrated at the Kadangot Aaroodha Tharavadu by the family members every year in date of Khumbam 10–11 (in the month of Feb–March). The Kadangot Nambiars have got Veerachamundeswari as their Clan Deity who is being worshipped along with Kadangot Makkam Bhagavathy. വടക്കെ മലബാറിലെ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ‘കടാങ്കോട്’ എന്ന നമ്പ്യാര്‍ തറവാട്ടില്‍ പന്ത്രണ്ട് ആങ്ങളമാരുടെ ഏക സഹോദരി മാക്കം സുന്ദരിയും സുശീലയും സമര്‍ത്ഥയുമായിരുന്നു. സഹോദരന്മാര്‍ക്ക് ഏറെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവളായ മാക്കത്തിന് അവര്‍ യോഗ്യനായ ഭര്‍ത്താവിനെ കണ്ടെത്തുകയും ആര്‍ഭാടപൂര്‍വ്വം കല്ല്യാണം നടത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. സദ്ഗുണ സമ്പന്നയായ മാക്കം യഥാകാലം രണ്ട് കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളുടെ അമ്മയായി. അവര്‍ക്ക് ചാത്തു, ചീരു എന്ന് നാമകരണം ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. മാക്കത്തിന്റെ സൗന്ദര്യവും തറവാട്ടില്‍ ആങ്ങളമാര്‍ അവള്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കുന്ന സ്ഥാനമാനങ്ങളും കണ്ട് അസൂയ പൂണ്ട നാത്തൂന്‍മാര്‍ അവളെക്കുറിച്ച് അപവാദം പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ആങ്ങളെമാരെ കൊണ്ട് മാക്കത്തിനെയും, മക്കളെയും ചതിച്ചു കൊല്ലാന്‍ പദ്ധതി ആവിഷ്‌ക്കരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാല്‍ മാക്കത്തിന്റെ ഇളയസഹോദരന്‍ ഈ അരുംകൊലയ്ക്ക് കൂട്ട് നില്‍ക്കാന്‍ വിസമ്മതിക്കുകയും മറ്റ് സഹോദരന്മാരെ ഇതില്‍ നിന്നു പിന്തിരിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. തലയണമന്ത്രത്താല്‍ മതിഭ്രമം വന്ന മറ്റ് പതിനൊന്ന് സഹോദരന്മാരും നിശ്ചയിച്ചുറച്ച പദ്ധതിപ്രകാരം മാക്കത്തെയും മക്കളെയും ലോകനാര്‍ക്കാവിലെ ഉത്സവം കാണാന്‍ നിര്‍ബന്ധിച്ച് കൂട്ടി കൊണ്ട് പോകുകയും വഴിമധ്യേ മാക്കത്തെയും മക്കളെയും ചതിച്ച് കൊല്ലുകയും ചെയ്തു. കൃത്യനിര്‍വ്വഹണത്തിനു ശേഷം സ്വഗൃഹത്തിലെത്തിയ പതിനൊന്ന് സഹോദരന്മാരും അവിടെ കണ്ട കാഴ്ച അത്ഭുതകരവും ഭയാനകവുമായിരുന്നു. പതിനൊന്ന് സഹോദരന്മാരുടെയും ദുഷ്ടബുദ്ധികളായ ഭാര്യമാര്‍ നിലത്ത് രക്തം ഛര്‍ദ്ദിച്ച് മരിച്ചു കിടക്കുന്നു. ദേവി സ്വരൂപത്തെയും, ദേവീ സാമിപ്യത്തെയും പ്രാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതായി സഹോദരന്മാര്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കി. ഞൊടിയിടയില്‍ അവരും രക്തം ഛര്‍ദ്ദിച്ച് പ്രാണന്‍ വേര്‍പ്പെട്ടു എന്നതാണ് മാക്കം തിറക്ക് പിന്നിലുള്ള ഐതിഹ്യം. മാക്കം ഭഗവതിയുടെ പ്രീതിക്കായി മാക്കം തോറ്റം, മാക്കം തിറ എന്നിവ ഭക്തജനങ്ങള്‍ വര്‍ഷം തോറും കൊണ്ടാടുന്നു #theyyam #kannurtheyyam #Maakkam #KandangotMakkam #Theyyam #KannurTheyyam #TheyyamOfKannur #TheyyamKerala #KeralaTradition #kannur #kannurnews #kannurmedia #kannurdiaries #theyyam #theyyamkasargod #theyyamsofmalabar
