It Took Me 3 Days to Reach Where Forest Joe Hid for 3 Years
Three days. One kayak. For this trip, I headed into Congaree National Park with one goal: reach the place where Forest Joe once hid in the South Carolina swamp. In 1862, Forest Joe escaped slavery and disappeared into the floodplain near the confluence of the Congaree and Wateree Rivers. He survived there for three years before eventually being betrayed. Looking at old maps, I realized something: in a place like this, the water wasn’t just scenery—it was how people moved through the landscape. So instead of taking the easy route, I loaded the kayak and followed Cedar Creek. Over three days I paddled through old-growth forest, fished, hiked, camped, dealt with setbacks, and slowly made my way deeper into the swamp toward the place Forest Joe once called refuge. This isn’t a history documentary. It’s an attempt to experience a place—and understand why someone chose to disappear into it.
