◄ SPANISH ► ALOYSIUS • 1906 es una obra de encargo de la Banda Sinfónica Municipal de Palma de Mallorca, realizado a propuesta de su director y amigo José Enrique Martínez Esteve, con motivo del 60.º aniversario de la formación y para el concierto dedicado a la enfermedad del alzhéimer, titulado “Epidemia Silenciosa”. Esta propuesta pretende alzar la mirada y dar visibilidad a esta realidad tan cruda, reivindicando —a través de la música— la fuerza de la memoria compartida. El título “Aloysius 1906” nos remite al año en que el doctor Alois Alzheimer abrió las puertas de la neuropatología moderna al describir por primera vez los rasgos clínicos y neuropatológicos de la demencia presenil que, más tarde, su colega Emil Kraepelin denominaría enfermedad de Alzheimer. Aloysius, variante del latín del nombre Alois, utilizada con frecuencia en ámbitos científicos, subraya este vínculo histórico, y este estreno de 2026 coincide simbólicamente con el 120.º aniversario de aquel descubrimiento que transformó para siempre la comprensión de las demencias.. Está dedicada a su gran amigo Isidro Coll Ballesteros, quien desgraciadamente inició el camino de esta enfermedad siendo aún muy joven. Amigo leal y persona extraordinaria, Isidro representa para el compositor un espacio constante de complicidad, amistad sincera y música compartida a lo largo de los años. Director y compositor profundamente activo, Isidro ha sido referente en la dirección de bandas en Valencia y durante muchos años profesor de Fundamentos de Composición en el Conservatorio Municipal de Ribarroja. Su huella humana y artística sigue creciendo y alumbrando a quienes lo rodean, incluso en estas circunstancias tan difíciles. Su estreno tuvo lugar el 18 de junio de 2026, a cargo de la Banda Sinfónica Municipal de Palma de Mallorca bajo la dirección de su titular, José Enrique Martínez Esteve. El escenario, el emblemático Castell de Bellver, que, suspendido sobre la bahía, domina Palma con su silueta circular única y casi onírica. Para el autor, esta composición sugiere, en esencia, una serie de reminiscencias sinfónicas que, desde la perspectiva de la enfermedad, se despliegan como un eco de identidad que persiste entre la niebla del olvido... allí donde la memoria fragmentada aún busca un lugar para reconocerse. La obra proyecta un hilo de luz que tiembla en la penumbra de la indiferencia, mientras los recuerdos, trémulos y quebrados, se aferran a un último instante para brillar. ◄ENGLISH► “Aloysius – 1906” is a work composed for the Municipal Symphonic Band of Palma de Mallorca (Spain), and commissioned by its conductor and friend to the composer, José Enrique Martínez Esteve. It was composed in commemoration of the band’s 60th anniversary, and specifically for a concert dedicated to Alzheimer’s disease, entitled "Silent Epidemic." The concert’s goal was to help raise awareness of this crippling disease, and to champion – through music – the power of shared memory. The title “Aloysius – 1906” refers to the year Dr. Alois Alzheimer opened the door to modern neuropathology by describing, for the first time, the clinical and neuropathological features of the pre-senile dementia, which his colleague Emil Kraepelin would later name “Alzheimer’s disease.” In Alzheimer’s day, many scientists would publish their findings using the Latinized version of their first names. “Aloysius” is the Latin variant of Alzheimer’s first name, and it was selected accordingly by the composer for use in the title of this piece. “2026” comes from the year of the premiere of this work, and it also coincides with the 120th anniversary of Alzheimer’s discovery that forever transformed our understanding of dementia. The work is dedicated to the composer’s close friend, Isidro Coll Ballesteros, who tragically began his journey with this disease while still very young. An extraordinary person and loyal friend, Isidro continues to be a source of connection, cherished friendship, and musical inspiration for the composer. The premiere of “Aloysius - 2026” took place on June 18, 2026. It was performed by the Municipal Symphonic Band of Palma de Mallorca, under the direction of its musical director and conductor, José Enrique Martínez Esteve. The venue for this performance was the iconic Bellver Castle, which overlooks the bay of Palma de Mallorca, and whose unique, almost dreamlike circular silhouette dominates the city’s skyline. For the composer, this composition suggests, in essence, a series of symphonic reminiscences which – viewed through the lens of this illness – unfold as an echo of identity struggling to persist amidst the fog of oblivion... there, where fragmented memory still seeks for a place to recognize itself. This work casts a thread of light that shimmers in the gloom of indifference, while memories, quivering and shattered, cling to a final moment where they can once again, if only briefly, shine.
